On October 16, 2017, EPIC’s Program Director, Dr. Lisa B. Felipe, led a workshop titled, “Small Changes, Big Impact.” Using 2001’s revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and James Lang’s Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning, Dr. Felipe focused on how teachers can encourage two foundational learning actions, remember and understand, to strengthen the necessary building blocks for more complex forms of learning. The group of graduate students and faculty worked together to come up with some small interventions–short-answer quizzes, embodied learning exercises, working in pairs, and more– that they might implement quickly and easily, but that would have a big impact on students’ comprehension of class materials.
