Mellon-EPIC Fellowship Application for Faculty: Medical, Environmental and Digital Humanities AY 2018-2019

The EPIC Program is now accepting applications for the AY 2018-2019 Seminars in Teaching Excellence (STE) for the following seminars:

  • Medical Humanities (Fall 2018)
  • Environmental Humanities (Winter 2019)
  • Digital Humanities (Spring 2019)

These STEs will explore the pedagogical approaches to teaching these interdisciplinary curricular fields that are in development within the Humanities Division. The seminars will have the additional aim of developing recommendations for how each experimental track can be formally integrated into the Humanities curriculum at UCLA towards innovative and collaborative teaching.

The goals for the Medical, Environmental, and the Digital Humanities STEs are as follows:

  • explore general scholarship and debates surrounding each interdisciplinary field.
  • study and discuss best practices and pedagogical approaches for teaching each field.
  • create sample curricula for each fields that may be incorporated or formalized within Humanities departments and higher education institutions as a concentration for undergraduate study and a locus for innovative and collaborative teaching.
Commitment

The Seminars in Teaching Excellence (STE) will explore topics that are fundamental to teaching and learning in the humanities and support innovative approaches to humanities curricula through productive discussions and collaborations between UCLA and area community college faculty, and UCLA graduate students. The outcome for each seminar will vary and will be determined by the faculty leads and participants of each STE, but at the very least the seminars are required to provide:

  • an annotated bibliography of relevant scholarly articles
  • one other product that can used or adapted to provide pedagogical training and instructional support for faculty and TAs

The seminars require a maximum of 30 hours of in face-to-face meetings and 20 hours of at-home preparation (i.e., reading, development of project materials). Fellows are expected to attend all meetings, notify the co-leads in the event of professional/personal conflicts of interest, and contribute to the final project.

Meeting times for each STE (subject to change):

  • Medical Humanities Fall 2018, Tuesdays 2pm to 5pm
  • Environmental Humanities Winter 2019, Fridays 11am to 1pm (bi-weekly)
  • Digital Humanities Spring 2019, Wednesdays 1-4pm, biweekly from week 2
Eligibility

Tenure-track and full-time instructors from the Division of Humanities, Musicology, and the Department of History at UCLA are invited to apply for the STEs. Adjunct instructors and postdocs are also eligible to apply and will be considered as space permits. For each STE, two spots will be reserved for our Community College partners. Benefits

Faculty members in humanities fields, including musicology and history, are encouraged to apply. There are eight spaces reserved for UCLA ladder faculty and full-time lecturers/adjuncts in each STE. In addition, two spaces are reserved for faculty from community colleges. Each faculty participant will receive a $5,000 research grant. After the completion of an STE, faculty participants may apply for a Teaching Innovation Grant.

    The AY 2018-19 STEs are designed explore the pedagogical approaches to teaching interdisciplinary curricular tracks within the Humanities and to provide recommendations for formally integrating Medical, Environmental, and Digital Humanities into the curriculum. In a 1-2 page cover letter, please describe how you think the Humanities Division, your institution, and/or your department would benefit from offering courses and programming on these interdisciplinary fields. In addition, what are some ways that the STE content might be formally integrated into the broader UCLA curriculum (i.e., minor, major, certificate, workshop series, etc.)? Please specify your answers to the STE to which you will be applying and provide concrete examples, when applicable.
