Tips, Tricks and Treats Talk Series: Bilingualism and the Relationship between Speech Perception and Production

EPIC-Lang presents “Bilingualism and the Relationship between Speech Perception and Production”, a talk by Professor Ji Young Kim as part of the Tips, Tricks, and Treats talk series. Ji Young Kim is Assistant Professor of Linguistics at UCLA with specialization in heritage language phonology. In this talk, Professor Kim will focus on the perception and production of Spanish lexical stress by two groups of Spanish-English bilinguals: English L2 speakers of Spanish and Spanish heritage speakers, and will highlight the distinct learning experiences exhibited by the two groups. Professor Kim will also discuss effects of language dominance on bilinguals’ Spanish lexical stress and propose ways in which this multidimensional construct should be explored when understanding bilingual phonetics and phonology.
