“Hot Moments in the Classroom”
Wednesday, January 30, 2019
4:00-6:00pm
Location: Powell 186

Invited speaker:
Emma Naliboff Pettit
Program Director
UCLA Intergroup Relations Program

This gathering will focus on presenting strategies for de-escalating moments of tension in the classroom, especially around issues of identity. How does a professor deal with contentious issues regarding race, gender, religion, and politics? What are practical Dos and Don’ts for turning “hot moments” in the classroom into “teachable moments”?

The mission of EPIC Inclusive Gatherings is to provide an open space for professors to learn about issues of inclusivity and their related best pedagogical practices. After a brief talk by an invited speaker, we will participate in an open, productive and constructive conversation related to the specific topic connected to inclusivity.

“Inclusive Gatherings” is a Teaching Innovation Grant project inspired by the Seminar in Teaching Excellence (STE): Inclusive Classrooms and it is lead by Professors Jimena Rodriguez, Carla Suhr and Stephen “Kip” Tobin. Teaching Innovation Grants are open to all former STE participants. Please see more information about the Teaching Innovation Grants here.
