Teaching at UCLA: Next Steps For Improved Remote Instruction

Please join the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) for a campus-wide teaching symposium, Teaching at UCLA: Next Steps For Improved Remote Instruction.

Our goal is to for attendees to address challenges and share great ideas for teaching remotely. This symposium is a collaboration of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences, Online Teaching and Learning, and many individual contributors. We hope you join us for this important showcase, conversation, and exchange of ideas!

 

Symposium Information

Schedule

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Rethinking Strategies for Evaluating Student Performance, Competency, or Mastery in STEM classrooms
Join the CEILS team for an interactive session sharing best practices for remote assessments in STEM that disincentivize cheating. We will explore the strengths and weaknesses of remote proctoring, and discuss alternative strategies to consider for remote assessment of student learning. We invite you to review the checklist currently in preparation describing recommendations from campus stakeholders.

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM – Student Panel: 5 Things We Wish Faculty Knew About Teaching with Zoom
Undergraduate students will share their insights about learning remotely and offer suggestions about how faculty can maximize teaching with Zoom. Staff from the Center for the Advancement of Teaching will then moderate an open discussion with attendees.

1:30 PM – 2:30 PM – Cultivating Interactivity in Large and Small Classes
Explore strategies for using technology to foster interaction among students and between students and instructors/TAs. Share your success stories and challenges, and learn through conversation with faculty facilitators and attendees. Staff from the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Online Teaching & Learning Initiative will be available to offer support and to introduce tools that can enhance student learning by fostering interactivity.

3:00 PM – 4:30 PM – Creative Strategies for Evaluating Student Performance in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences
Explore innovative approaches to evaluating student learning in the performing arts, humanities, and social sciences. An interdisciplinary group of faculty will share brief reflections about how they have been adapting low-stakes and high-stakes assignments for remote teaching. We will then open the session for active discussion with attendees about opportunities and challenges in their own classes.

Some adjustments may be made to the schedule accordingly and you will receive a confirmation. Meeting links will be sent out the day before each session to those who RSVPed.
